Our locally grown "right from the orchard apples"
are great examples of what the Okanagan represents. Family,
customers, friends, employees or other visitors to this area
will appreciate that fruit from the Okanagan Tree Fruit Cooperative is synonymous with Okanagan quality and freshness.
Here
are some of the apple varieties you may find at our outlets:
Ambrosia
is a chance seedling found in Cawston, British Columbia.
Fruit size is medium, with an attractive red blush and
faint stripes on a cream or yellow background. Crisp and
sweet, Ambrosia is best eaten fresh. Usually available
late September to December. |
Royal
Gala is a hybrid of Kidds Orange Red and Golden
Delicious. It is a sweet apple with excellent texture
and flavour. It is a crisp, firm fruit. Usually available
from September to March. |
Red
Delicious is large and long, with six small knobs
at the end of the apple opposite the stem. Its color is
usually dark red, with darker stripes, although some are
yellow. It is sweet and usually eaten raw. The Delicious
is on the market from October until Spring. |
Golden
Delicious has an irregular oval shape, and is
bright yellow, with darker specks and streaks. It is sweet,
and generally is eaten raw or in salads. It has about
the same season as the Delicious. |
McIntosh
is one of the most popular apples. Its several subvarieties
range from yellow to red and crimson. It has a long marketing
season. Usually available from September to May. |
Spartan
is a cross between McIntosh and Newtown apples. An excellent
all-purpose apple with crisp, snowy-white flesh and an
unusually small core. The Spartan has a distinctive, sweet
flavour and cooks soft and smooth. Usually available October
to July. |
Granny
Smith has a tart-tangy, crisp flavour. Bright
green skin. Great for eating out of hand and a very good
all purpose apple; good cooker because of its ability
to retain flavour. Usually available late October. |
Fuji
is a large apple with a base colouring of yellow/green
overlaid with red stripes, and is excellent for desserts
or eating out-of-hand.The Fuji's flesh is cream coloured,
very firm, juicy and sweet. Available late October to
late February. |
