Tree Digger

As a group, the Okanagan Packinghouse Fieldmen's Group set out to visit a couple of tree nurseries in Washington. We visited Columbia Basin Nursery and Willow Drive Nursery. The purpose of our trip was to see how the trees which so many of our growers buy, are grown, dug up and stored before being transported north. It was a very informative (but whirlwind!) tour which we all benefitted from!

Looking at roots

After the trees were dug out of the soil, we all had a good look at the bare roots.
The tree diggers are amazing!

Paul in the trees Charlotte in the tree storage

Each tree was clipped to height by a machine (all shorter than Paul!), before being dug up and stored (bare root) in cold storage over the winter.

Both nurseries looked really clean and tidy, and had amazing operations! Thanks to Neal (Willow Drive) and Brandon (Columbia Basin) for their hospitality!
